Are you blind or partially sighted? Do you want to learn about dealing with the cost of living crisis and share your concerns?
Current rises in the cost of living are having a bigger impact on blind and partially sighted people. This is when we already face additional, unavoidable costs like taxi journeys, assistive technology and support in the home.
At this event, you will find out how to get advice on benefits and grants you may be entitled to, money saving and budgeting tips. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and share your concerns.
This free event is specifically designed for blind and partially sighted people living in Tyne and Wear.
Event details
- Date and time: Thursday 25 August 2022, from 10:30am – 1:30pm
- Venue: Mea House, Ground Floor Grand Auditorium, Ellison Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 8XS.
- This event is completely free to attend, and lunch and refreshments will be provided.
- Disabled parking spaces are available close to the venue.
Topics at the event:
- How to maximise your income: You will receive free advice from a dedicated benefits advisor from local charity Newcastle Vision Support. This will include around how to maximise your income, benefit checks, and grants and payments you may be entitled to.
- Money saving tips: You will get tips in accessible formats relevant for blind and partially sighted people, such as support with setting up online banking in response to many physical banks disappearing from the high street.
- The importance of budgeting: You will learn tips to help you manage bills, as energy and other costs increase. For example, monthly direct debits can help people to budget rather than waiting for a quarterly bill.
- The impact on mental health: both directly and indirectly. We will discuss the potential impact of the cost of living crisis on emotional wellbeing.
- Where to get help: Learn about local support such as Citizens advice, local authority debt advice, sight loss charities and national support from RNIB.

This event a Tyne and Wear Sight Loss Council event. Attending the event is also a great way to find out more about the work of the Sight Loss Council and the ways in which people can get involved.
Sight Loss Councils are led by blind and partially sighted members. Together, they tackle local issues and work with businesses and service providers to improve the accessibility of their services.
